Position Description

The Museum of Russian Art (TMORA) has an immediate opening for a Director of Museum Operations. This full-time position reports to the President/Director of TMORA. Candidate's style must be highly self-motivated and suited to a small, but dynamic organization that emphasizes creativity, independence, and entrepreneurialism. The Director of Museum Operations must be an experienced professional who will direct and supervise museum operations and programs including: exhibition planning and execution, marketing, budget and planning, visitor services, membership, and facility oversight. TMORA currently operates with an annual budget of $1.8 million. Candidates need to have a flexible schedule and a willingness to work as needed, including occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Essential Functions

Exhibitions, Art & Artifacts: Responsible for day-to-day supervision of all issues relating to exhibitions including installation planning and scheduling, building preparation, art transportation, financial and insurance requirements, contract negotiations, shipping, storage, and condition report documentation. Will work closely with curator and designers to ensure all exhibition elements are handled within budget. Must develop a program of registrar procedures and protocols to insure positive control of TMORA's permanent collection and all inbound and outbound art.

Special Events: Coordinate all aspects of TMORA special events including donor events, exhibition openings, outreach and educational programs. Oversee facility rentals for external client events, including contract negotiations, third-party vendors, and insurance requirements. Manage all museum events with assistance from the special events coordinator.

Facility Management: With assistance from the facilities manager, oversee and approve all building-related vendor service contracts, all maintenance projects affecting the physical structure and operation of the facility and grounds, and the facilities budget.

Marketing: Coordinate and oversee the creation & distribution of marketing materials and museum literature, including advertising, print publications, brochures, and web communications.

Museum outreach: Represent TMORA at museum industry events; collaborate with other national or international entities in programmatic, information and resource sharing initiatives; ensure the development of strong community relations and implement effective methods for attracting diverse Museum audiences; communicate the Museum vision and goals to the general public and donors. Minimal overnight travel may be required.

Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Museum Studies, Public Administration or a related discipline with progressively-responsible leadership experience.
  • Seven (7) years of management experience.
  • Public communication and presentation experience.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional entrepreneurial and collaboration skills
  • Strong conceptual planning and budgeting capabilities.
  • Superior organizational and team management skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of technology with proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite products, including databases and spreadsheet applications in a Windows environment.

Preference will be given to candidates that possess an advanced degree in an appropriate field of study and hands-on leadership experience in the museum or nonprofit section. Knowledge of Russian history or art history a plus.
