Position Description
The Museum of Russian Art (TMORA) is seeking a Curator of Russian Art & Artifacts. This position reports to the President/Director of TMORA. The Museum is seeking a knowledgeable, motivated professional to assist in developing and overseeing all exhibition programs. The successful candidate will work closely with the President/Director and design team in all departmental work including researching, planning, installing, and cataloguing all exhibition art and artifacts, as well as working closely with an extensive group of collectors, patrons, and donors. TMORA currently operates with an annual budget of $1.8 million. Candidates need to have a flexible schedule and a willingness to work as needed, including occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Essential Functions
- Assist President/Director and Director of Operations in identifying and evaluating subjects and themes for TMORA exhibitions.
- Assist in the selection of art and artifacts that most effectively support the subject matter and theme of TMORA exhibitions.
- Handle all aspects of art procurement to insure the timely availability of all works required for exhibition.
- Identify and handle all matters relating to exhibition installation, design, and scheduling.
- Assist the Operations Director in identifying, recruiting, and scheduling qualified speakers for TMORA-sponsored seminars and lectures.
- With the assistance of the Operations Director, develop and implement educational outreach programs which align with TMORA exhibitions
- Participate in the creation of exhibition research, educational materials, in-house publication pieces, digital presentations, and other written works as required.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
- An advanced degree in art history or a related field.
- Expertise in Russian art, 19th or 20th century European painting, or a related field of study.
- Proficiency in the Russian language desired; fluency strongly preferred.
- Prior museum experience required, preferably in the curatorial arena.
- Demonstrated experience in installations and exhibitions.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- A record of scholarly writing and publication preferred.
- Broad knowledge of and enthusiasm for working in the world of art.
- Advanced knowledge of technology and best practices in museums with proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite products, including databases and spreadsheet applications in a Windows environment.
