“We were delighted to have hosted the exhibition, “In the Russian Tradition: A Historic collection of 20th-Century Russian Paintings” here at the Smithsonian’s International Gallery.

The striking paintings went a long way to help dispel the misconception that many Americans have about Russian art from the last century. Unfortunately, many of us think that they are dull, colorless, lifeless works of art, when in fact, they are vibrant, beautiful and full of life.

The visitors to the exhibition here in D.C. must have gotten the message, because many of them returned two or three times in order to take it all in and to share it with friends. The exhibition averaged 425 visitors a day, which is a very good figure for the gallery, especially for the time of year (mid-December through early April). A total of 51,151 experienced the magic of the exhibition. This was the best attendance figure for an exhibition in that gallery over the last two years.

I trust that the Smithsonian’s decision to host the exhibition will spark an interest in other museums throughout the country and that we’ll see more and more shows like this in the coming years.
